25 new Sprites arrive in the September 3 update

The v42.10 update landed this morning, and it is the biggest single Sprite drop of Chapter 7 Season 4 so far: 25 new Sprites. Four brand-new base Sprites, six variants of those, and the first fifteen Sprites in an entirely new variant line — Loot Hacker.

Every ability below is the real in-game text.

The four new Sprites

  • X-Ray — Legendary. Periodically mark enemies in an area around you. Mark more often and in a larger radius with each Level Up!
  • Onigiri — Rare. Applies Overdrive after eating or drinking a Consumable. Overdrive lasts longer with each Level Up!
  • Mega Man — Rare. Slip and slide around with reduced friction while Sliding. Slide farther with each Level Up!
  • Overshield — Rare. Grants Overshield, scaling with Sprite Level.

X-Ray is the only Legendary of the four, and it is the one worth chasing first. The pre-release write-ups had it revealing players through walls; the shipped version is a periodic marking pulse instead, closer to a Storm Scout than a wallhack.

X-Ray and Onigiri are both Design-A-Sprite contest winners — the first two of five Epic has promised. Worth flagging against our August post: the five winners named back then were Bullet, Dumpster Dive, Honey, Pond and X-Ray. Onigiri wasn't on that list, so either it shipped under a new name or the earlier roster was incomplete. Three winners are still outstanding either way.

Cheat Master and Gold variants

Three of the four new Sprites arrived with the standard variant pair, all six Special rarity:

  • Cheat Master X-Ray, Cheat Master Onigiri, Cheat Master Overshield — same effect as the base Sprite, plus the Cheat Master bonus: "Activates Cheat Code Injectors with any button inputs."
  • Gold X-Ray, Gold Onigiri, Gold Overshield — same effect, plus 3x bonus XP from eliminations.

Mega Man is the exception. It shipped with no variants at all — no Cheat Master, no Gold. There is nothing in the files pointing to any either, so for now it is a one-card set.

The Loot Hacker line

Loot Hacker is a fourth variant tier, sitting past Gold in the mastery chain. Fifteen of them arrived with this update, all Special rarity:

Loot Hacker Crown, Klombo, Jackrabbit, Killswitch, Shadow, Tails, Sonic, 8-Bit, Bushranger, Adventure, Jonesy, Storm Scout, X-Ray, Onigiri and Overshield.

That is the full twelve-Sprite Override roster plus the three new Sprites that have variants — which is another way of saying every Sprite that can have a Loot Hacker version now has one.

Two caveats worth knowing before you go hunting:

Only Loot Hacker Crown is obtainable right now. The other fourteen are in the game files and in the catalog, but not yet unlockable. Expect them to switch on over the coming weeks, most likely alongside Power Hours.

The Loot Hacker theme bonus hasn't surfaced yet. Cheat Master and Gold both carry their bonus text in-game; the Loot Hacker cards currently show only the base Sprite's own effect. We'll update the catalog the moment the real text appears rather than guess at it.

To get Loot Hacker Crown you work the chain in order — base Crown, then Cheat Master, then Gold, then Loot Hacker, mastering each to unlock the next. Crown only levels up by winning matches, so from a standing start that is four Victory Royales. This update also fixed the bug where mastering Crown failed to grant its Cheat Master variant, so the chain actually works now.

A naming note

The in-game strings are inconsistent again, so a few names will look odd:

  • The base Sprite is Bush, but its new variant ships as Loot Hacker Bushranger.
  • Epic writes Cheat Master Overshield but Cheatmaster X-Ray and Cheatmaster Onigiri.

The catalog uses Cheat Master throughout and follows the official name on everything else, so searches will find them either way.

Also in this update

  • Resummoning a mastered Sprite now costs half the usual Sprite Dust.
  • Mastery Mondays return on September 7.
  • A new Sprite Mastery track was added, with more rewards — including an arcade-themed Back Bling — landing in v42.20.
  • The Loot Hack weapon pool picked up the Holo Twister Assault Rifle, Deadeye Assault Rifle and Wrecker Revolver, and hacked loot is now capped at Rare-to-Legendary rather than Epic-to-Mythic.

Tracking and trading them

Mark each one Missing, Collected, or Mastered from the website or with slash commands in Discord. Anything you own can be offered in a trade with members of a Discord server you share.
